Nguyen Phuoc Thien and Le Minh Quoc Trung are first two recipients of Ket Doan Association’s “Save a Child” project

5/16/12

Overview of the program

In January 2012, Ket Doan Association officially launched the Save a Child project. The purpose of this project is to provide financial support to impoverished children in Vietnam. Ket Doan Association and our partners will establish and maintain a year-long commitment to each individual. To ensure the dedicated resources are effectively utilized, the Association will require bi-monthly progress reports during the year long sponsorship. The sponsorship can be renewed on a yearly basis which is dependent on the progress and need of the child. Our goal is to build a successful program that will generate more funding in hopes of expanding our program to sponsor more individuals.

Organization and children selection process

Ket Doan Association sent out a proposal to several nonprofit organizations expressing our interest in the child sponsorship program. After receiving positive responses from the various organizations, we decided to partner with Love Across the Ocean (LATO). We decided to collaborate with LATO because their program was able to meet our requirements. Since then, LATO has provided us with a list of children, from age 6-18 along with their background information. We are pleased to announce the selection of two highly deserving children from the list. The selections were based on their financial and family situations as well as their exemplary status in school.

Selection

The Ket Doan Association’s “Save a Child” project is officially partnering with Love Across the Ocean (LATO) and have allowed us to sponsor two children from their LATO program. We are pleased to announce Nguyen Phuoc Thien and Le Minh Quoc Trung will be the first two recipients of the program. KD sincerely thanks all donors and participants at the Strike 4 a Child Bowling Tournament (4/15/2011 )
The event was a huge success with more than 80 bowlers and raised over 5,952.64
A short write up by our fellow bowler Lam Le

For the past 10 years, Ket Doan (Vietnamese Americans United) has been providing charity work and community aid to the less fortunate across the United States and Vietnam. From what started as a group of Vietnamese friends from a college VSA to a successful non-profit organization, Ket Doan continues to provide events to raise funds and helps the less fortunate people of this country and Vietnam. This year they started their first annual bowling tournament so let's see how it goes.

Two weeks before, the signs of competition is flaring, spirits are high, trash-talking is soaring, everyone is motivated, all levels of anticipation is high, who will reign victor after this day, who will have bragging rights for the rest of the year, and for the most important point of them all: how many Vietnamese children can we feed when this event is over? The answer relies on the amount raised for this year's first annual Ket Doan bowling tournament.

On this day of April 15, 2012, with over 100 people attending from all across the East coast, this tournament has the ability to be epic. Groups from across the DC Metro area including Ket Doan, DC Viet Alliance, CAMSA, NOVAL, and VNMAP unite for one goal in common: to raise awareness and money for the less fortunate children in Vietnam. The time of battle has started, 18 groups bowl their hearts content, cheering at strikes, hand-clapping for support, and giving notice that they just provided a good score for their team. At times of break, everyone's eyes are wandering, checking out their competition's score. Seeing which team has the best overall score, who are secret weapons and who are push-over's. Runners from Ket Doan checking and updating score values, making sure everyone is playing fair, everyone is having a good time, and everyone is proud to be here. Ladies are screaming with every strike, men are distracted from the screams of Strike Force and everyone concentrating on making the next strike. The first round is over and raffle prizes are called. WHAT!! CAMSA is called up for prizes three times!! Oh wait, they just won twice. Everyone is booing, yelling for a redo. Other teams are cracking up and having a good time. All expectations from Ket Doan are positive. The second round starts with strikes heading it off and heading for the end of this great day.

Finally the last team report their scores, the numbers are tallied, and a victor is set. As Huy Lam tries to pronounce the team's name, he passes the microphone to Hao Phan to say it correctly. The bragging right for the highest score goes to Chica-Bow-Wow or something like that. The team that raised the most money goes to Ninja Bowlers. And the event itself raised over $5,000 for “Ket Doan Save A Child” program. Good show Ket Doan, you did a great job

KD sincerely thanks all donors and participants at the Hike-a-thon (10/15/2011 )
The event was a huge success with more than 60 hikers and raised over $3500. The following are the our corporate sponsors:
A short write up by our fellow hiker Hong Luong:

Aside from the perfect weather we had after days of endless raining, the day of the hike was just perfect. A picture says a thousand words and we have hundreds of pictures, and some videos, just to try to capture the experience we all came together for the very first time with this event.

We not only met our goals but double the expectations. The hikers came with great spirits, laughed and trek through what seems like an enchanted forest. Even spectators, who weren’t with our group, were fascinated by all the commotions and asked what we were here for. When they found out, their face lit with such a gleam and simply shouted ‘good for you guys!’

Yes, it was a great day for all of us. When we reached our destination in high altitude with Mother Nature, as if heaven was on earth, to share our glory of our accomplishments. They came not only from our hearts and our souls, but also our determination for the good of society.

This would not have been possible without all the support and donations from our sponsors who were there in spirits. We will spread their kindness to our friends, family, and our networks for their generous donations. FEEDING AMERICA will receive another helping hand this holiday. Those aren’t fortunate to have the warmth of a family but will have the support of an extended family, such as ours, who are constantly thinking of ways to help those in need.
