According to a 2006 UNICEF survey, about seven million or one third of all children below the age of sixteen in Vietnam lived in poverty. One third of children below the age of five are stunted as a result of chronic malnutrition. Almost half of all children do not have access to a hygienic sanitation facility in their home and two thirds of all children do not have a children’s book.
In 2006, 40 per cent of children living in rural areas were poor, compared with about 10 per cent of children living in cities. Child poverty rates were highest in the Northern mountainous regions, up to 78 per cent in the North West and North East, and in the Mekong River Delta as much as 60 per cent of children were identified as poor.
In January of 2012, Ket Doan officially launched a project called “Save a Child”. The purpose of this project is to provide financial, physical, and mental support to a child. Through this program, we hope to provide a means for adequate nutrition and access to clean facilities for each child. This will be a major benefit to the child we sponsor as well as his/her community because as an organization we have more manpower and resources to ensure a long-term commitment. We hope to help one child at a time. In the future, we expect to expand our program and sponsor more children.
In order to raise money to support this program, we hosted a bowling tournament called “Strike 4 a Child.” There were more than 100 people participating in our event and more than 50 sponsors and donors. We are happy to announce that we collected about $6,000 from the last year event. This year, we continue to reach out to our generous sponsors and donors who are willing to provide financial assistance to the children. Donations can be made through adopting our sponsorship packages link below. Ket Doan Association graciously accepts any contribution amount made to the program.
